John Freeman

I was born in 1944 in the city of Toronto and have lived in Alberta since 1947. I received my education at the University of Calgary, The Alberta College of Art and the University of Alberta. I taught art at the University of Alberta, Department of Art and Design full time from 1972 until the spring of 2003 when I retired and part time with the Department of Art and Design until the spring of 2006. I am now involved full time with The Big Pixel Inc. and the production of my own art work.

In my art practice I have used a wide range of materials and technologies — sculpture, painting, drawing, print making photography, and video have all been grist for the mill. My most recent work involves the development of large format digitally generated and printed images that play with the nature of representation and reality mediated by photography and text. I strive to balance subject and form with neither at the expense of the other.

During my career as an artist I have exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada and internationally. My work is represented in many public, private and corporate collections.
